Meet Dr. Michelle Kew: Sports Medicine Surgeon

Dr. Michelle Kew is a board certified, attending orthopedic sports medicine and shoulder surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery and an assistant professor at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell in New York City. She is also a member of the HSS Women’s Sports Medicine Center.

As a fellowship-trained sports medicine and shoulder specialist, Dr. Kew has experience across a wide variety of sports medicine conditions. Her particular areas of interest include sports-related or traumatic ligament, meniscal, and cartilage injuries of the knee, patellar (knee cap) instability, shoulder instability, shoulder rotator cuff tears, and shoulder arthritis. Dr. Kew’s expertise provides patients with a range of non-operative and surgical treatment, including minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures and open procedures. Dr. Kew has extensive experience caring for athletes of all ages and skill levels. She has been a team physician for the New York Giants, New York Red Bulls, and the Fork Union Military Academy Blue Devils. She is currently the team physician for the Long Island City High School Bulldogs football team.

Dr. Kew attended the University of Virginia for her undergraduate and medical training. She graduated with highest distinction with a degree in Biology and completed an orthopedic summer research fellowship, as well as several medical mission trips to Honduras. She completed medical school with honors and was awarded a teaching award for her mentorship and teaching of younger students. She continued her education at the University of Virginia and completed her internship and residency, where she was selected both as the junior resident of the year and as chief resident of the year during her residency. She joined the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society during residency and was selected to join the Membership Committee. Dr. Kew has used this platform to continue her passion to advance female participation in the field of orthopedic surgery. She is also a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and was selected as a member of the Education Committee. She continued her training with a sports medicine and shoulder fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. She traveled to the University of California-San Francisco, Mayo Clinic-Arizona, and Inova Fairfax for further specialized training with leaders in orthopaedic sports medicine. She remains very involved in clinical research and has presented her work at national and international meetings.
